Understanding implants

What is a dental implant?

An implant replaces the root of a missing tooth. Once fused with the bone, it holds a new fixed tooth that does not move and is brushed like a natural tooth.

1

The crown

The visible part, in ceramic, matched to the shade of your teeth.

2

The abutment

The connecting piece that links the crown to the implant.

3

The implant

An artificial titanium root, anchored in the jawbone.

Who is it for?

A solution for every situation

Implant or bridge: what is the difference?

The implant

  • Keeps the neighbouring teeth intact, with no filing down

  • Also replaces the root and stimulates the bone

  • A long-lasting solution with good care

The conventional bridge

  • Quicker to complete

  • Requires filing down the two neighbouring teeth

  • Does not replace the root

The right choice depends on your situation: we present the options and their cost at your assessment.

Step by step

The stages of implant treatment

1

Assessment and 3D scan

Examination of the mouth and gums, a CBCT scan to measure the bone, then a treatment plan and a detailed quote.

2

Placing the implant

Under local anaesthetic, 30 to 60 minutes per implant. Mild discomfort may last 2 to 3 days.

3

Healing

The implant fuses with the bone (osseointegration) over 3 to 6 months on average. A temporary tooth can be fitted in the meantime.

4

Final crown

An impression, then a custom-made ceramic crown, screwed or cemented onto the implant.

FAQ

Your questions about dental implants

Does having an implant placed hurt?
The implant is placed under local anaesthetic, so you feel no pain during the procedure, which takes 30 to 60 minutes per implant. Mild discomfort may last 2 to 3 days.
How long does implant treatment take?
Allow 3 to 6 months on average between placing the implant and fitting the final crown: this is the time the implant needs to fuse with the bone. A temporary tooth can be fitted in the meantime.
How much does a dental implant cost in Luxembourg?
As a guide, an implant with its crown usually costs between €1,500 and €2,500 in Luxembourg, depending on the complexity of the case. You receive a detailed quote at your assessment, with no obligation.
Is a dental implant reimbursed by the CNS?
The implant itself is not reimbursed by the CNS. The crown placed on the implant may be partly covered, subject to prior approval. A complementary insurance may cover part of the rest: check with your insurer using your quote.
Am I a good candidate for an implant?
Most adults with one or more missing teeth can have an implant. You need enough bone, healthy gums, limited smoking and, where relevant, well-controlled diabetes. The assessment with a 3D scan checks this.
What if I do not have enough bone?
A bone graft can rebuild the volume needed. We explain the options suited to your case at your assessment.
How long does an implant last?
An implant that is well fused with the bone is designed to last for many years. Careful brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular check-ups are essential.
Implant or bridge: which should I choose?
A bridge is quicker but requires filing down the neighbouring teeth and does not replace the root. An implant keeps the neighbouring teeth intact and stimulates the bone. We present both options and their cost at your assessment.
What happens at the first appointment?
The practitioner examines your mouth and gums, takes a 3D scan if needed, then explains the treatment plan and gives you a detailed quote, with no obligation. Book online or call (+352) 27 52 18 25.
How do I get to the practice by public transport?
Take tram T1 to the “Lycée Bouneweg” stop on rue de Houffalize, a 2-minute walk from the practice: from the central station, it is 2 stops towards Stadion. Buses also stop at “Lycée Bouneweg” and “Hippodrome”. Buses, trams and trains are free in Luxembourg.
